Abstract
The profound transformations driven by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0), particularly the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), have played a decisive role in the strategic redesign of production processes across leading global industries. These technologies are fundamentally reshaping traditional manufacturing paradigms, enabling unprecedented levels of automation, data exchange, and intelligent decision-making. In the automotive sector, which has historically been at the forefront of industrial innovation, the integration of IoT and AI is not merely an incremental improvement but a transformative force that redefines competitive advantage. According to market forecasts, the global artificial intelligence market specifically within the automotive industry is projected to experience substantial growth. It is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 32.7 percent, surging from a valuation of 3.89 billion US dollars in the year 2020 to an estimated 27.57 billion US dollars by the year 2027, as cited in reference [34]. This significant market trajectory underscores the critical importance and widespread adoption of these technologies worldwide. However, the path to successful implementation, particularly in developing industrial contexts like Iran, involves a complex set of interrelated factors that require careful strategic analysis and prioritization.
The primary objective of this research is to systematically analyze and prioritize the key factors that influence the successful implementation of the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence within the product manufacturing processes of the Iranian automotive industry. This study places a strong emphasis on adopting a strategic perspective, recognizing that technological adoption must align with broader organizational goals and industry-specific challenges to yield sustainable results. The research aims to move beyond a simple identification of factors and provide a structured understanding of their relative importance and interconnections. By doing so, it seeks to offer actionable insights for industry managers, policymakers, and technology experts who are tasked with navigating the complexities of digital transformation. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the enhancement of competitiveness, efficiency, and innovation capacity within one of Iran's most strategically important industrial sectors.
In terms of its methodological approach, this study is classified as applied research based on its objective, as it seeks to generate knowledge that can be directly utilized in practical decision-making and strategy formulation. Furthermore, it is descriptive-analytical in nature, as it aims to describe the current state of factors and analyze the relationships between them. The research adopts a quantitative approach, relying on numerical data and statistical techniques to test hypotheses and draw conclusions. The statistical population for this investigation comprises managers, experts, and specialists who are actively engaged in the fields of production, information technology, and digital transformation within Iranian automobile manufacturing companies. These individuals possess the direct experience and technical knowledge necessary to provide informed perspectives on the challenges and opportunities associated with IoT and AI implementation. Data collection was executed through the use of a structured questionnaire, meticulously designed to capture perceptions and evaluations related to various implementation factors. The gathered data were subsequently analyzed employing Structural Equation Modeling based on the Partial Least Squares method, commonly referred to as PLS-SEM. This advanced statistical technique is particularly well-suited for complex predictive models and allows for the simultaneous examination of multiple relationships among observed and latent variables, making it ideal for the exploratory nature of this research.
The empirical results derived from the PLS-SEM analysis revealed that seven principal factors exert a positive and statistically significant impact on the production process within the Iranian automotive industry when IoT and AI technologies are applied. These critical factors are: first, the optimization of production processes, which involves enhancing efficiency, reducing waste, and streamlining workflows through real-time data and intelligent automation. Second, the management of the supply chain and logistics, enabling smarter forecasting, inventory management, and coordination across the entire value chain. Third, the transformation of business models, where new data-driven services and revenue streams, such as usage-based insurance or predictive maintenance offerings, become possible. Fourth, the enhancement of product quality and the reduction of associated costs through more precise monitoring and control. Fifth, the capability for predictive failure analysis and the implementation of preventive maintenance regimes, which minimize downtime and extend the lifespan of manufacturing equipment. Sixth, the significant improvement of customer experience and after-sales service, facilitated by connected vehicle data and personalized interactions. Seventh and finally, the achievement of greater production flexibility and the enablement of mass customization, allowing manufacturers to respond more agilely to diverse market demands.
Among these seven identified factors, the analysis demonstrated that two factors hold the most substantial strategic weight. Specifically, intelligent supply chain management emerged as the most influential factor, with a path coefficient (β) of 0.732, indicating a very strong positive effect on production outcomes. This highlights the critical role of transparent, agile, and predictive supply chains in the modern automotive landscape. Following closely in strategic importance was the optimization of production processes, which recorded a path coefficient (β) of 0.476. This factor underscores the foundational necessity of improving core manufacturing operations through smart technologies. Collectively, these findings provide empirical evidence that while a holistic approach is necessary, concentrating efforts on supply chain intelligence and process optimization yields the most significant strategic returns. The research conclusively emphasizes the imperative for the Iranian automotive industry to adopt an integrated and strategically oriented approach in its deployment of IoT and AI technologies. Such an approach is not merely an option but a critical necessity for enhancing long-term competitiveness, fostering innovation, and ensuring sustainable growth in an increasingly complex and technologically driven global market. The successful navigation of this digital transformation journey will largely determine the future position and viability of Iran's automotive sector on both domestic and international stages.
